Do It Yourself:

Please note, a licensed guide is REQUIRED to accompany you if you plan to enter the national park. The directions below are for reaching Cotopaxi area accommodations ONLY and our focus is on accommodations near the northern entrance to the park simply because this area is less traveled and more scenic than the southern entrance. If you’re staying overnight, this is definitely where you want to be.

Head down to the southern bus terminal in Quito, Quitumbe. From here, you will find regular buses heading to Latacunga or, even better, Machachi. If taking a bus towards Latacunga, ask to be let off in Machachi and you will then need to walk about 10mins to the center of town to find onward transport. If ending in Machachi, you’re all set for step two.

Next, hire yourself a camioneta to take you the rest of the way to your lodging. You can identify registered camionetas by looking for white pick up trucks with green stripes and a registration number. There is always a line of them waiting just across the street from the central market. Negotiate pricing before you hop in a cab. You can expect to be quoted $20-30 depending on your destination. Be prepared; the ride is about 45 minutes along a bumpy road with a gorgeous, rural backdrop.
